The Parent and Toddler Groups at York Steiner School cater for children aged newborn up to 3 ½ years and their mothers and/or fathers, and often grandparents or other carers too. We come together, for a peaceful relaxing time, where we can play using simple toys made of natural materials in a friendly and supportive environment, where our imaginations can be free and where we can enjoy each other’s company. The groups are small and this makes it easy to make new friends, seek advice and support, and explore approaches to parenting, and toddling, with the goal of hopefully enriching us all.
We spend the first hour or so with free play during which a craft activity is provided, which toddlers can sometimes join in with under their parent’s guidance and supervision. What you have made, you can of course take home with you….and tea and coffee is offered during the session too. Later, we sit down together for a simple meal, and a drink of fruit juice. Each child brings a piece of fruit along from home to share. Then it is time to gather around in a circle for a few happy songs and rhymes, and in some groups a puppet play, before we all go our separate ways again until next time. The groups are 2 hours long.
As there is a clear rhythm to each session, providing the young child with a sense of reassurance and continuity, so there is also a rhythm to the year. We celebrate its seasons and festivals in the group and often as part of the larger community of the school. We also celebrate the children’s birthdays in a simple way. There is a small library in the Parent and Toddler Group room from which parents can borrow books about all aspects of Steiner education and general issues surrounding the care of the young child. The group leaders are also always there to answer questions and give information on any issue parents wish to ask about. There are Parent and Toddler groups running on each weekday during term time.
The School also hosts independently run activities for very young children and their parents. Please see our events noticeboard for details.
