Imagine the journey of humanity from making his first deliberate marks to reaching out to the stars and beyond. From Class 1 to Class 8, the class teacher has the privilege of guiding your child along that path, through a range of Main Lesson topics from learning to write the first letters, through farming and building, beautiful geometry, right up to astronomy, meteorology and history that only stops with today’s newspaper.
Your child's class teacher will, in most cases, stay with your child for 8 years, providing experiences that give a living connection between the child and the world.
Of course, one important way of connecting with the world is learning to write, read and handle numbers. This is begun in Class 1 with clear imaginative images and stories making living pictures in the child that enliven what would otherwise be abstract letters and symbols. The child recalls such images readily and, by working artistically with them, makes them their own.
This nurturing of the child's inner life through picture and narrative, enlivens and strengthens the imagination, and is at the heart of Waldorf teaching , not just with the class teacher, but in subject lessons such as languages, gym and eurythmy, taught by trained specialists.
